A little preparation before your dumpster arrives makes delivery faster, protects your property, and helps your project start on schedule instead of losing time to avoidable delays. None of this takes more than a few minutes, but skipping it is the most common reason a delivery gets pushed back or a driveway ends up with a mark it didn’t need to have.
Before Delivery Day
Clear the drop zone. Whether you’re using your driveway or another area of your property, make sure the space is free of vehicles, toys, potted plants, and anything else that could be in the way. Our trucks need a clear, straight path to place the dumpster exactly where you want it.
Measure your space. A 12 yard dumpster needs roughly 12 feet of length and 8 feet of width; a 15 yard needs a similar footprint but sits slightly taller. Most standard driveways handle either size without an issue, but if your space is unusually narrow or short, mention it when you book so we can plan placement accordingly.
Check for overhead obstructions. Low-hanging tree branches or power lines near your intended drop zone can complicate placement. If you’re not sure whether your space has enough overhead clearance, a quick description when you book helps us prepare.
Decide on placement in advance. Know exactly where you want the dumpster before the truck arrives closer to the house for convenience during loading, or off to the side to keep your driveway more usable during the rental period. Communicating this clearly when you book, or directly to the driver at delivery, keeps things moving quickly.
Protect sensitive surfaces if needed. If you’re placing a dumpster on a driveway you’re especially concerned about a newer paver surface, for example, let us know in advance. We can talk through placement options that minimize contact with a specific area if that’s a concern for your property.
The Day of Delivery
Be available, or leave clear instructions. You don’t need to be present for delivery, but if you won’t be there, leave clear placement instructions when you book so the driver knows exactly where to drop the dumpster without needing to reach you.
Confirm your delivery window. We’ll confirm a delivery date when you book. If your schedule changes or you need a more specific time window, call ahead rather than assuming. This helps avoid a missed connection on delivery day.
Check the dumpster once it’s placed. Take a quick look to confirm it’s positioned where you expected. If anything needs adjusting, a quick call while the truck is still nearby is easier to resolve than waiting until later in your rental window.
Loading Your Dumpster Efficiently
Break down bulky items where possible. Flattening boxes, disassembling furniture, and breaking down larger items lets you fit more into the same space, which matters more for a 12 yard than a 15 yard, but helps either way.
Load heavy items first, lighter items on top. This keeps weight distributed evenly and makes better use of the full container rather than leaving gaps.
Keep the load level with the top of the dumpster. Debris piled above the rim can’t be legally transported on most trucks and may require you to redistribute the load or use a swap if you’re significantly over capacity better to load with this in mind from the start.
Separate anything questionable. If you’re not sure whether an item is allowed (see the next section), set it aside rather than loading it and asking later. It’s easier to address before pickup than after.
What You Can and Can’t Put in a Dumpster
Generally accepted:
- Household furniture and general clutter
- Construction debris (drywall, flooring, framing lumber)
- Yard waste (branches, sod, storm debris)
- Appliances (in most cases – ask if you’re unsure about a specific item)
- Cardboard, packing material, and general trash
Typically not accepted:
- Hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, solvents)
- Tires
- Certain electronics (ask about specifics – rules vary)
- Batteries
- Medical waste
- Items containing refrigerant (some appliances require special handling)
If you’re unsure whether something can go in your dumpster, ask when you book rather than guessing. It’s a quick question, and getting it right upfront avoids a more complicated conversation at pickup.
During Your Rental Window
Load at your own pace. Every rental includes a 1–7 day window, so you don’t need to fill the dumpster in a single day. Spread the work out however fits your schedule.
Keep the area around the dumpster clear. This makes ongoing loading easier and keeps your property looking tidy throughout the rental period, especially relevant if the dumpster’s visible from the street or if you’re in an HOA-governed community with visibility guidelines.
Contact us if plans change. If your project runs faster or slower than expected, or if you realize you’ll need more capacity than anticipated, reach out as early as possible so we can plan a pickup adjustment or swap without last-minute scrambling.
Pickup Day
No need to prepare anything special. Once your rental window ends, or you call to request early pickup, we handle the removal. You don’t need to do anything beyond making sure the dumpster is accessible the same way it was for delivery.
Final check. Take a look at the area once the dumpster is removed to confirm everything looks the way you expect. If anything seems off, let us know right away so we can address it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be home for delivery or pickup?
No, as long as you’ve left clear placement instructions when you book. Many customers aren’t present for either delivery or pickup.
What if I’m not sure my driveway has enough space?
Describe your driveway or intended placement area when you book, including rough dimensions if you have them. We can help you figure out whether your space works before the truck arrives.
Can I move the dumpster myself once it’s delivered?
No, dumpsters are heavy and require specialized equipment to move safely. If placement needs adjusting, call us rather than attempting to move it yourself.
What happens if I accidentally put a restricted item in the dumpster?
Contact us as soon as you notice. Depending on the item, we can walk through next steps, which may include removing it before pickup.
Is there a way to keep the dumpster from blocking my whole driveway?
Yes, let us know your placement preference when you book. Many customers position the dumpster to one side to keep partial driveway access throughout the rental period.
